For this year's TABConf I'll be running a workshop to show people how to get the work-in-progress SeedSigner MicroPython code onto these amazing Waveshare esp32-P4 4.3" touchscreen dev boards.
They'll learn how the code / repos are structured, how to compile their own builds, and how to fork and customize as they see fit.
The boards will be theirs to keep.
The idea is to seed the ecosystem with more potential contributors. TABConf isn't just random noob attendees. It's the most technical annual conference. It's where all the builder nerds come together. These are exactly the people we want to reach.
My MicroPython port is initially targeting the esp32-P4 microcontroller (but the expectation is that many many others will also be supported over time). This dev board lands at a sweet spot of incredible performance, gorgeous high-res (800x480) touchscreen, and affordability.
But even more significant: Krux and Specter DIY are also targeting the P4 and this board in particular for their own ports. And Odudex's Kern project already runs on it. In other words: the entire DIY signing device ecosystem is shifting to this board.
So putting this board in devs' hands isn't just good for SeedSigner, it's good for the entire space.
I've already ordered 30 of these dev boards at my own expense. I don't want to have to charge each participant $43.80 to buy the hardware from me. Obviously that's not a huge expense, but the spirit and expectation at TABConf is that there's a lot of free hardware.
Free hardware will make it an easy "Yes" for someone to spend the time to get engaged. And once they're in, I think they'll be hooked.
The MicroPython port running on an awesome touchscreen is a HUGE upgrade to the SeedSigner experience. And while the code is more or less fully functioning, there's been ZERO code review. I expect that phase to take 6-12 months once I start opening PRs -- and I'm still ~2-4 months away from that.
We're going to need lots of talented eyeballs on the code. The more we can get people excited about what we're building AND have the hardware to run it on, the better.
So if you want to see this get to a production release anytime soon, help me recruit more builders.
